Local FFA Chapters Compete in County Soils, District Soils and County Forestry

COUNTY SOILS CONTEST


On Friday, September 20th, students from Highland, Mt. Gilead,  and Northmor Schools competed in the annual Morrow County Soils Judging Contest held at The Morrow County Fairgrounds.


In the rural contest for the Morrow County Schools,  Highland took top honors with a score of 2,363 points, Mt. Gilead placed second with 2,349 points, and Northmor placed third with 2,323 points.


In the urban contest for the Morrow County Schools, Highland placed 1st with 2,277 points, Mt. Gilead placed 2nd with 2,067 points and Northmor scored 2,006 points.


Morrow Soil and Water Conservation District would like to thank all of the students who participated and congratulate the winners who will be advancing to the District Soils Contest. A special thank you to The Morrow County Fair Board for allowing the use of the land and Mike Bush for digging the pits.



DISTRICT SOILS CONTEST


On Monday, September 23rd, the Morrow Soil and Water Conservation District hosted the District Six Soils Contest at the Eco Center located in Caledonia, Ohio.


  24 schools across nine Central-Ohio counties were represented by over 200 students, it was a full morning of surveying in four soil pits and two written exams for each student.


Both Highland and Mount Gilead will be advancing their Urban Soils and Agricultural Soils  teams to the State Contest on Oct. 12th.


We would like to give a special “Thank you” to Mike Bush for digging the pits, Emily Ollervides for opening the Eco Center for the contest, Sarah Reynolds from Highland FFA who helped coordinate this event as well as to all of the FFA Teachers and volunteers.



COUNTY FORESTRY CONTEST


On Thursday, October 10th, 103 students from Cardington, Highland,  Mt. Gilead and Northmor Schools competed in the annual Morrow County Forestry Judging Contest held at Flying Squirrel Preserve in Chesterville, Ohio.


A portion of the contest takes the students into the woods for timber cruising, a technique used by foresters to measure the volume of timber in a give area. Do you know how to use a Biltmore stick? These student do!


Next, the students were on to identifying tools of the forestry trade and trees by leaf samples. Rounding out the event is a compass course.  


    It was a full morning wrapped up with pizza at the park.


Teams completed placed as follows: Highland, Cardington, Mount Gilead, Northmor. The top placing students were Shelby Michaels (Highland), Ryan Young (Highland) and Natalie Jagger (Mount Gilead).


The Morrow Soil and Water Conservation District would like to thank all of the students who participated and congratulate the top placings.
